Palenque is well known to be the soul of the Mayan world, with more then 200 architectural structures and constructions that where built over 10 miles, including the Temple of Inscriptions, The Grand Palace, The Temple XI and the Temples of the Foliada Cross, The Sun of the Count and of course the Ball Game.

Palenque was build around 100 BC and started to grow as a farming village. By the time 300 to 600 AD, the city of Palenque grew and it turned into a large political center, home of the dynasty of Chiapas and Tabasco.

The Palenque archaeological zone is surrounded by a exuberant tropical jungle, with a large biodiversity of fauna such as jaguars and howler monkeys, the flore diversity includes ceiba, cedar, mahogany, chicozapote and calaguaste over an extension of over 1,700 ha.

Just about 4 miles to the East of the archaeological zone and the National Park, is the Palenque Town, where you will find restaurants, markets and the beautiful Waterfalls “Agua Azul and Miso-Ha” .

This waterfalls give the name to Palenque, the English translation would be “Many Water” a result of the many rivers that flow in the area.
